Ubuntu Linux Easy to install and use - many flavors (Kubuntu, Edubuntu, etc)
One of my favorites because it seems to install on just about any
hardware and is very reliable.
Fedora Linux Fedora Linux from RedHat - a little more technical
On the side of "bleeding edge", but usually pretty stable.
Usually precedes new releases of RedHat Linux as a test bed.
Simply Mepis Linux Simply Mepis Linux - another favorite for ease-of-use
Some versions are fussy about the hardware, though.
PCLinuxOS Wow - really easy to install and get working + FAST
It has become my work PC operating system because of the
simplicity and speed.

Windows
UBuntu
Installer
Lets you install Ubuntu to run under Windows!
It changes the boot sector (makes your PC a 'virtual' dual-boot) and uses up about 10-15GB (as a Windows file) for the Linux virtual partition. It's just another application. BUT it insists on downloading the Ubuntu Alternate i386 version, which can take MANY hours, even on a relatively fast link, because you are rate-limited by the server. On my high-speed link (6MB/sec) it took about 12 hours. Plan accordingly.

Smoothwall Smoothwall is a very easy to setup Linux firewall that will run on older PCs.
It also lets you do port forwarding to protect a web server
behind the firewall. You do need two ethernet ports for this.
If you have three ethernet ports, you can also set up a DMZ.
One really nice feature is the ability to BLOCK incoming IP addresses.
Mine is running on an old Pentium 3 at 600MHz with 256MB ram.
This one is Debian based, so you can use apt-get for ease of
program installation.
If you're interested in an alternative operating system that doesn't crash, try one of these.
Best of all - they are free. Some offer VMWare, which allows you to run many Windows
programs under linux.
Here are some of the flavors I have running here:
  • Redhat EL3 Server (Fedora is the user version)
  • Ubuntu 7.10
  • PC Linux OS 2007
  • Digipup on a 3.5" CD
  • Knoppix 5.1 on a 5" CD for forensics and recovery

  • Note that for Ubuntu, Mepis, and PCLinuxOS, you can get GMFSK (a very nice digital mode
program for Linux) by entering the following line from a terminal session as root:
       apt-get install gmfsk
-or as a user with sudo privileges-
       sudo apt-get install gmfsk

This way the apt-get software takes care of all the behind-the-scenes stuff.
    Linux software for download here

You can boot it up in your computer without affecting
anything on your hard drives. Then run the included
